Air Stool Møbler
Air Stool Møbler

Physical Prototyping
Each year over 9 million tons of furniture is thrown out. And Ikea alone uses 20 million cubic meters of solid wood every year. I wanted to demonstrate a solution to this issue by creating a high-quality piece furniture with the minimum amount of material.
Plywood has been used for decades, but I wanted to innovate on the techniques employed by traditional furniture manufacturers. As part of my study abroad program, I learned from Danish furniture designers Erling Christoffersen and Peter Johansen who guided me during the design process and taught the traditions of Scandinavian furniture design.
What if furniture was both well-made and less wasteful?
Air stool weighs less than 3 pounds.
And it’s 90% air.
It’s made from a single sheet of 1 mm technical plywood.
When combined with Burlap the plywood becomes strong and resists cracking.
Less than two square meters of material is used in each stool.
Four Velcro® pads hold it together.
Assembly is straightforward without the need for tools or hardware.
Process
Initial development and concept iteration. Distilled from all of my sketches.
Experimenting with paper representing thin plywood.
Single-sheet construction and evolution. I tried making it stackable!
Further experimentation with structure and connection mechanisms.
More experiments with connections using only the material itself. Playing with different reinforcement techniques for areas of stress.
Paper and plywood prototypes and experiments. Most failed!
First final functional prototype. More yet to be done...
Tusind tak til mine profs. Peter og Erling!
